In Birmingham, tree trimming usually means getting dead and storm-damaged limbs out before the next storm, lifting branches off the roof, gutters, and driveway, and thinning a crown that has grown too heavy. Done right, it keeps a good tree healthy for years and costs far less than a removal later.
K&M has been trimming and pruning trees around Birmingham and Shelby County for over 30 years. Owner Kenny Malone personally oversees every job and prefers to see the tree in person before he gives a price.

Why people call K&M for this
Well-kept trees hold up better in storms. Taking out dead and weak limbs and thinning a heavy crown reduces the risk of costly damage later, and it usually costs far less than a removal or an emergency call after a storm.
Customers say it in their reviews. Luke H. had a tree covered in vines with power lines running through it and wrote that K&M trimmed and took it down perfectly. Wayne B. has used K&M for several years and says they take care of his property like it is theirs.
Not every tree can be saved by trimming. If removal is the better call, the same free estimate can cover that too.
Tree trimming cost in Birmingham
ProMatcher puts tree trimming in Alabama at $115 to $143 an hour for a two-person crew. Most homeowners get a price per job instead, and it depends on the size of the tree, how much needs to come out, what is underneath it, and whether the crew can use a bucket truck or has to climb. See the tree service cost guide for more, or call for a free on-site estimate.
Crown thinning, crown reduction, and raising
Crown thinning removes selected branches inside the canopy so light and air get through. It lightens a heavy crown and lets the grass underneath grow.
Crown reduction removes upper branches to bring the height down. It is used when a tree is at risk of wind stress, while keeping the shape of the tree.
Crown raising removes lower branches that hang over the roof, driveway, walkway, or yard.
When to trim trees in Alabama
Late winter, while trees are dormant and before new growth starts, is the best time for most pruning. Heavy pruning during the spring growth flush or heading into fall puts more stress on the tree. Dead, broken, and hazardous limbs are the exception and can come off any time of year, and getting them out before spring storms and hurricane season is smart.

Tree trimming and pruning questions
ProMatcher puts tree trimming in Alabama at $115 to $143 an hour for a two-person crew. The price for your tree depends on its size, how much comes out, access, and cleanup. The estimate is free, and our cost guide has more detail.
By the size of the tree, how much needs to come out, whether it is over the house or near power lines, whether a bucket truck can reach it or it has to be climbed, and how much debris there is to haul. That is why an on-site estimate is more accurate than a phone quote.
People use the words interchangeably. Pruning usually means selective cuts for the health and structure of the tree, like removing dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Trimming usually means cutting for shape and clearance, like lifting limbs off the roof or away from the driveway.
Dead, damaged, and diseased. Those branches come out first on any tree, at any time of year, because they are the most likely to fall and can spread problems to the rest of the tree.
Avoid heavy pruning during the spring growth flush, when new leaves are coming out, and in fall as trees head into dormancy. Late winter is usually best. Dead or hazardous limbs can come off any time.
For light work and for dead or hazardous limbs, no. For heavy pruning, fall is not ideal because cuts close slowly as the tree heads into dormancy. Major pruning is usually better in late winter.
A common rule of thumb is no more than about 25 percent of the live canopy in one year. Taking more stresses the tree. Dead and broken branches do not count against that.
The branch collar, the slightly swollen area where a branch meets the trunk. Cuts should be made just outside it so the wound can close. Cutting flush against the trunk, leaving long stubs, or cutting the main top of the tree off all cause long-term damage.
Topping the tree, flush cuts against the trunk, leaving stubs, stripping out all the interior branches, removing too much at once, pruning heavily at the wrong time of year, and trying to trim near power lines yourself.
Dead wood builds up and drops, crossing and weak limbs rub and split, branches grow over the roof and gutters, the lawn underneath gets shaded out, and the tree is more likely to fail in a storm.
It reduces the risk. Removing dead and weak limbs, thinning a heavy crown, and reducing height on a tree at risk of wind stress all make a tree less likely to break in high wind. No trimming makes a tree storm-proof.
Do several trees on one visit, be flexible on the date, and combine trimming with any removals or stump grinding you need. Compare quotes for the same scope, including cleanup, and ask for proof of insurance.
There is no general program in Alabama for free tree trimming. Utilities trim trees that threaten their lines, and some counties run debris programs after a declared disaster.
If limbs are in the main power lines, call Alabama Power first. They have to be involved before anyone cuts near those lines. Tell us about any lines when you call.
Usually your own homeowners insurance covers the damage and removal from the structure, even if it was the neighbor's tree. The neighbor may be responsible if they knew the tree was dead or hazardous and ignored it. Insurance work and claims are welcome here, and we accept all insurance.
Yes. Debris removal and a thorough cleanup are part of the job.
