K&M has handled several tree removal jobs for me, the most memorable of which was on a Sunday, when a huge oak tree fell.

Who handles which trees in Birmingham
A tree on your lot is yours to maintain. The City of Birmingham's Horticulture and Urban Forestry Division handles tree trimming, removal, and right-of-way maintenance along major thoroughfares and in city parks.
To report a city tree that is dead, hanging over the road, or blocking a view, call 311 or use the MyBHAM311 app. If you are not sure whether a tree is on your property or in the city right of way, ask 311 before you hire anyone to cut it.
Limbs, brush, and what the city picks up
Since January 2025, Birmingham picks up bulk trash and brush every other week, on a schedule set by neighborhood. The city asks residents to put limbs out the day before their area's pickup. Call 311 for your date or to report a missed pickup.
Extra brush can go to one of the city's four Waste District roll-off sites or to the Eastern Area Landfill, which is free for residents with a Jefferson County ID.
The important part if you are hiring someone: the city's resident guide says tree removal contractors must haul away the limbs they cut, and trimmings cannot be left in a yard. Make sure haul-off is written into any tree quote you get in Birmingham.
Trees near power lines
Alabama Power maintains a 30-foot-wide easement along its neighborhood distribution lines, 15 feet on each side, and trims only where it has a legal right and believes it is necessary. You can ask Alabama Power to evaluate a tree through its online tree trimming request, and the company says a representative will contact you within 5 to 7 business days.
Under OSHA and ANSI Z133 safety standards, no unqualified person should work within 10 feet of an overhead power line. If a tree or limb is on a line, stay away from it, treat the line as live, and call Alabama Power first. See 24 hour emergency tree service.
Storms and Birmingham trees
On April 27, 2011, an EF-4 tornado tracked 80.68 miles from Tuscaloosa into the Birmingham area, up to 1.5 miles wide, and killed 65 people, according to the National Weather Service. It hit Pleasant Grove, Concord, McDonald Chapel, Smithfield Estates, and Fultondale.
Spring is the peak of severe weather season in Alabama. A tree that is already dead, cracked, or leaning toward the house is the one most likely to come down in it. See dangerous tree removal and storm damage tree cleanup.

Size, how close the tree is to the house, access, and whether haul-off and the stump are included move the price most. The pricing guide has the full breakdown. K&M estimates are free.

K&M was quick to respond when a tree fell on our house on a Sunday evening and did an impressively thorough job cleaning up.
Incredible experience. Lost a tree in the middle of the night and they were the only company to respond!
Very responsive and did great work! Some other tree companies were trying to take advantage of our insurance and these guys gave a very fair price.
Kenny and his crew showed up on time and did exactly what they said they would do. They left the area spotless like new. Great prices and very dependable.
Great guys to work with, showed up when they said they would and cleaned up so well you couldn't tell they were there.

The city. Its Horticulture and Urban Forestry Division handles trees along major thoroughfares and in parks. Report the tree to 311 or through the MyBHAM311 app.
The city's public works pages do not list a permit for removing a tree on a private residential lot. Trees in the city right of way are the city's, and HOAs can have their own rules. If you are unsure, call 311 before work starts.
Alabama Power trims along its own lines where it holds an easement, and you can request an evaluation through its online form. Tree work within 10 feet of a power line should only be done by line clearance qualified workers.

Late fall and winter. Spring storm season is the busiest time of year for tree crews, and prices follow demand.
Usually when the tree damages a covered structure, like the house, garage, or fence. A tree that falls and hits nothing is generally not covered. Check your policy. See storm damage tree cleanup.
It gets weaker every year and starts dropping limbs, and eventually it fails at the trunk or roots, often in a storm. See dangerous tree removal.
Trimming is usually cheaper and keeps the shade. A dead or badly leaning tree usually has to come down. See tree trimming.
