K&M came out same day and took down some very large and potentially hazardous pines that were leaning towards my house.

Storms in Pelham
On April 19, 2009, an EF-0 tornado with 80 mph winds crossed Interstate 65 and lifted just past County Road 52 near the fire station in Pelham. It was up to 800 yards wide, and the National Weather Service found numerous trees snapped and uprooted along the path, with fallen trees hitting homes and mobile homes.
On March 25, 2021, an EF-3 tornado crossed north Shelby County. In Pelham, the National Weather Service found four homes with their roofs torn off, and trees came down along the Cahaba River, many of them onto homes in the Chandalar neighborhood. Trees were uprooted in Oak Mountain State Park as well.
In 2005, an F-0 tornado ran 11.4 miles through Helena, Pelham, and Alabaster before dawn, the Shelby County Reporter reported. Weak tornadoes and straight-line winds take down trees that were already dead, cracked, or leaning. See dangerous tree removal and storm damage tree cleanup.
Trees and power lines in Pelham
Alabama Power keeps a 30-foot strip, 15 feet on each side, along its neighborhood distribution lines, and you can ask it to evaluate a tree through its online tree trimming request. Only line clearance qualified workers should be within 10 feet of an overhead line. If a tree or limb is on a line, stay back and call Alabama Power first.
Wooded lots and lot clearing
Not every Pelham job is one tree. Building on a wooded lot, adding a shop, or opening up a backyard can mean clearing brush and small trees, grinding stumps, and grading the ground afterward. K&M handles land and lot clearing and grading as well as single-tree work.

Incredible experience. Lost a tree in the middle of the night and they were the only company to respond!
We have been doing business with K&M for some 20 years. They have always been responsive, reliable and fair.
I have been using K&M for several years. Prices are good, crew is great and they always clean up. They take care of my property like it's theirs.
Excellent guys, respectful of my property and in and out quick. 5 trees down, three stumps ground.
Big #1 Motorsports needed some major lot cleanup and these guys absolutely knocked it out! Showed up early and worked in the rain to get the job done in one day.

K&M is based in Columbiana, the Shelby County seat, and works across Shelby County, including Pelham, Alabaster, Helena, and Chelsea.
ProMatcher lists $351 to $435 for a standing tree under 30 feet in Alabama, and Homeyou puts a medium tree in the Birmingham area at $521 to $709. See the pricing guide.
Roughly $150 to $750 using HomeGuide's per-foot figures, and $351 to $435 in Alabama according to ProMatcher. A tree next to the house or on a slope costs more.
The cheapest quote is often missing insurance, haul-off, or the stump. Compare quotes for the same scope of work and ask for proof of insurance.
Schedule in late fall or winter, do several trees in one visit, grind the stumps the same day, and keep the firewood. Do not cut insurance or haul-off to save money.
Late fall and winter, when crews are less busy. Spring storm season is the busiest and most expensive time.
Trees can be removed any month of the year. For trimming, heavy pruning is best avoided during the spring growth flush, and late winter is usually best.
Usually only when the tree damages a covered structure, like the house or a fence. Removing a tree that has not hit anything is generally on the owner. See storm damage tree cleanup.
The property owner, for a tree on their lot. A dead tree near the house only gets more dangerous and more expensive to remove the longer it stands.
It gets weaker every year, starts dropping limbs, and eventually fails at the trunk or roots, often in a storm. See dangerous tree removal.
On your own lot, often yes, but check with the City of Pelham and your HOA first. The bigger issue is safety: a tree near the house, a fence, or a power line is not a DIY job.
Trimming is usually cheaper and keeps the tree. A dead or badly leaning tree usually has to come down. See tree trimming.
A common rule of thumb is no more than about 25 percent of the live canopy in a year. Dead and broken limbs can come off any time.
There is no general free program. Alabama Power handles trees threatening its lines, and debris programs sometimes follow a declared disaster. A tree on your own lot is normally the owner's cost.
Rarely for a single homeowner. After a federally declared disaster, FEMA and county programs sometimes help with debris. Homeowners insurance is the most common way a removal gets paid for.
