Why people call K&M for this
Storm work is where homeowners get taken advantage of. After a big storm, out-of-town crews knock on doors with cash-only prices. K&M is based in Columbiana, has served the Birmingham area for over 30 years, and is licensed, bonded, and insured with coverage up to $1 million in property damage liability.
Michael C. wrote that other tree companies were trying to take advantage of his insurance and K&M gave a very fair price. Sadie C. had a tree fall on her house on a Sunday evening and said K&M was quick to respond and did an impressively thorough job cleaning up.
Trees and storm debris, not water damage
K&M is a tree company. We remove fallen and storm-damaged trees, take down broken limbs, and clear the wood and debris from your property. If the storm also damaged the roof or let water into the house, you will need a roofer or restoration company for the building itself, and your insurance company can help with that. K&M gets the tree out of their way.
What to do after a storm damages your trees
1. Stay safe. Keep people and pets away from downed trees and hanging limbs. Stay away from any power line, and call Alabama Power if one is down. Call 911 if anyone is in danger.
2. Take photos of the trees and any damage from a safe spot before anything is moved.
3. Call your insurance company if a tree hit the house, garage, fence, or a car.
4. Look up. Broken limbs hung up in a tree, cracked trunks, and trees that are newly leaning are the ones that cause the second round of damage.
5. Call K&M at (205) 965-2821. Do not try to cut a tree that is on a structure, under tension, or near a line yourself.
What storm tree cleanup costs
A tree that is already on the ground usually costs less to remove than a standing one. HomeGuide puts fallen tree removal at two to three times less than cutting down a standing tree. A tree resting on a roof, tangled in lines, or needing a crane costs more, and CompareTreeServices notes that after-hours emergency work runs higher than the same job in daylight. When a tree hits a covered structure, homeowners insurance usually pays to remove it from the structure. See the tree removal cost guide.
Insurance and storm-damaged trees
Insurance work and claims are welcome, and K&M accepts all insurance. In general, when a tree falls on a covered structure like your house, garage, or fence, your own homeowners policy pays to remove it from the structure, usually with a limit on debris removal, even if it was the neighbor's tree. A tree that falls in the yard and hits nothing is generally not covered. Every policy is different, so check yours. This is general information, not legal advice.

Very responsive and did great work! Some other tree companies were trying to take advantage of our insurance and these guys gave a very fair price.
Incredible experience. Lost a tree in the middle of the night and they were the only company to respond!
K&M has handled several tree removal jobs for me, the most memorable of which was on a Sunday, when a huge oak tree fell.
Great guys to work with, showed up when they said they would and cleaned up so well you couldn't tell they were there.
Big #1 Motorsports needed some major lot cleanup and these guys absolutely knocked it out! Showed up early and worked in the rain to get the job done in one day.
Storm damage tree questions
It depends on the size of the tree, what it landed on, and access. A tree already on the ground in the open usually costs less than a standing one (HomeGuide puts it at two to three times less). A tree on a roof, in power lines, or needing a crane costs more. If it hit a covered structure, insurance usually pays to remove it from the structure.
Usually when a tree falls on a covered structure like the house, garage, or fence, often with a cap on debris removal. Some policies also cover a tree blocking the driveway. Trees that fall in the yard and hit nothing are generally not covered. Insurance work and claims are welcome here, and we accept all insurance.
Usually yours. Your homeowners policy covers damage to your house no matter whose tree it was. The neighbor or their insurer may be responsible if they knew, or should have known, the tree was dead or dangerous and did nothing. This is general information, not legal advice.
When a healthy tree is blown over by a storm, each owner's own insurance usually covers the damage to their own property. Negligence changes that: if the tree was obviously dead or dangerous and the owner knew, they can be held responsible. This is general information, not legal advice.
Usually yes. Damage to your car from a falling tree generally goes through the comprehensive coverage on your auto policy, and your deductible applies, unless the neighbor was negligent and their insurer pays. Check with your agent.
Take photos before anything is moved, report the claim as soon as it is safe, keep every receipt and invoice, and ask what your policy covers for tree and debris removal. K&M can help with your insurance claim.
Stick to the facts: what happened, when, and what was damaged. Send photos and invoices. Do not guess about causes or costs you do not know, and be honest. Your adjuster works from what you can document.
Stay away from downed lines and hanging limbs, take photos, call your insurer if a structure was hit, and have the damaged trees looked at before the next storm. Do not top the tree or cut off more than you have to in a panic. Broken limbs should be cut back cleanly, and the rest can wait.
Generally the owner of the property where the tree landed handles the cleanup, through their own insurance if a covered structure was hit. Trees in the city right of way are the city's. After big storms, cities sometimes run curbside debris pickup, so check with yours before paying to haul small brush.
Often, yes, if the trunk is not split, the roots are intact, and the tree lost less than about half of its crown. Broken limbs get cut back cleanly and the tree is given a season to recover. Trees that are split down the trunk, uprooted, or leaning with the ground lifting usually have to come down.
A tree that lost a few limbs usually fills back in over a few growing seasons. Wait until the next dormant season for any major pruning beyond removing broken and hanging limbs. A tree that lost most of its crown may never fully recover.
Trees with weak wood or weak branch unions, like Bradford pears and water oaks, tall pines with small root systems, and any tree with decay, cracks, or roots damaged by construction. Trees standing alone after neighboring trees were cleared also catch more wind.
Usually a long strip of bark blown off down the trunk, sometimes in a spiral, plus split or scorched wood. Some trees die over the following months even when the damage looks minor. A lightning-struck tree near the house is worth having looked at.
Watch for a new or worsening lean, soil cracking or lifting at the base, deep cracks or splits, fungus on the trunk, and large dead or hanging limbs. See the warning signs on our dangerous tree removal page, and call for a free look before the next storm.
There are no general tree removal grants in Alabama. After a federally declared disaster, FEMA and county debris programs sometimes help, and utilities clear trees off their lines. Insurance usually pays when a tree falls on a covered structure.
No. K&M handles the trees and the storm debris. For roof repairs and water damage inside the house, you will need a roofer or restoration company, and your insurer can help. K&M gets the tree out of their way.
