Vestavia Hills sits on top of Shades Mountain, and a lot of its homes sit on sloped, wooded lots under big hardwoods and pines. The city has been a Tree City USA since 1991. When a tree on a slope dies or starts to lean toward the house, taking it down is a job for a crew that plans every cut, not for gravity.
K&M Professional Tree Service has worked across the Birmingham area for over 30 years, is based in Columbiana, and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Owner Kenny Malone personally oversees every job. Below is what is specific to Vestavia Hills.

What Vestavia Hills picks up, and what it does not
Vestavia Hills' garbage service is run by Amwaste, and there is no set day for limbs and yard debris. Request a pickup through Vestavia Hills Connect or by calling Public Services at 205.978.0150, and it is collected within 10 business days.
The limits: branches no longer than 6 feet, less than two cubic yards per pickup, piled within 3 feet of the curb with nothing overhead. Leaves, pine straw, and clippings must be bagged or they will not be picked up, and 15 or more bags need a request.
The rule that matters if you hire someone: the city says tree services and landscapers must remove the trees and large bushes from their work, and only homeowner-generated material is collected. Make sure haul-off is written into the quote.
Street trees and your neighbor's tree
If you see a dead or sick tree in the city right of way, report it at 205.978.0150 or through Vestavia Hills Connect. The city says Public Services generally does not remove healthy trees from the right of way.
A neighbor's tree is a different story. Vestavia Hills says tree disputes between neighbors are a civil matter and the city does not get involved. If you cannot work it out, the city suggests getting legal advice.
For questions about a tree's health, the city points residents to the Jefferson County Extension office.
Storms on the mountain
On April 11, 2011, an EF-1 tornado with 100 mph winds touched down in Vestavia Hills and ran from behind the police department across Bird Park to near the Vestavia Hills Country Club. The National Weather Service found numerous large hardwoods uprooted and thirty pine trees snapped in Bird Park, and homes nearby were damaged by falling trees.
Storms do not have to be tornadoes to do damage. On June 1, 2026, a storm dropped a tree across a car on Indian Hill Road, WBRC reported. See storm damage tree cleanup and 24 hour emergency tree service.
Keeping the big trees
Not every big tree with a problem has to come down. A healthy oak with a weak fork can often be supported with cabling and bracing, and heavy limbs over the roof can be trimmed back. If you are not sure which you have, start with a tree hazard assessment.
What tree work costs in Vestavia Hills
Published guides put a medium tree removal in the Birmingham area at about $521 to $709 (Homeyou) and a standing tree under 30 feet in Alabama at $351 to $435 (ProMatcher). Slopes, tight access, and trees leaning over a house push the price up because the tree has to come down in controlled pieces.

We have been doing business with K&M for some 20 years. They have always been responsive, reliable and fair.
K&M came out same day and took down some very large and potentially hazardous pines that were leaning towards my house.
Great guys to work with, showed up when they said they would and cleaned up so well you couldn't tell they were there.
K&M was quick to respond when a tree fell on our house on a Sunday evening and did an impressively thorough job cleaning up.
I have been using K&M for several years. Prices are good, crew is great and they always clean up. They take care of my property like it's theirs.

Report a dead or sick tree in the right of way at 205.978.0150 or through Vestavia Hills Connect. The city generally does not remove healthy right-of-way trees.
In Vestavia Hills, the city treats a neighbor's tree as a civil matter between the two property owners and does not get involved. Talk to your neighbor first, and get legal advice if you cannot resolve it. This is general information, not legal advice.
In general, your own homeowners insurance covers damage to your house, even from a neighbor's tree. If the neighbor knew the tree was dead or dangerous and did nothing, that can change things. Check your policy and talk to your agent.
Ask for proof of insurance, whether haul-off and cleanup are included, whether the stump is included, and, in Vestavia Hills, whether the company has a Vestavia Hills business license. The city asks residents to check for one.
Read recent Google reviews, get more than one estimate for the same scope of work, ask for proof of insurance, and be wary of anyone who knocks on your door after a storm asking for money up front.
ProMatcher lists $351 to $435 for a standing tree under 30 feet in Alabama, and Homeyou puts a medium tree in the Birmingham area at $521 to $709. See the pricing guide.
The lowest quote is often missing insurance, haul-off, or the stump. Compare quotes for the same work. In Vestavia Hills, a quote without haul-off leaves you with debris the city will not take.
Roughly $150 to $750 using HomeGuide's per-foot figures, and $351 to $435 in Alabama according to ProMatcher. On a slope or next to the house it costs more.
There is no general free program. The city handles dead right-of-way trees, Alabama Power handles trees threatening its lines, and a tree on your own lot is normally the owner's cost.
Late fall and winter, when crews are less busy. Spring storm season is the busiest and most expensive time.
You can ask. Flexible scheduling, bundling several trees, and keeping the firewood can lower the price. Cutting insurance or haul-off to save money is not worth it here.
A common rule of thumb is no more than about 25 percent of the live canopy in a year. Dead and broken limbs do not count and can come off any time.
Trimming is usually cheaper and keeps the tree. A dead or badly leaning tree usually has to come down. See tree trimming.
