K&M came out same day and took down some very large and potentially hazardous pines that were leaning towards my house.
Tree Hazard Assessment in Birmingham, AL
Not sure if that tree is dying, dangerous, or just having a bad year? Have it looked at before it makes the decision for you.
- Licensed and insured
- Owner-operated
- 4.7 stars, 85 reviews

Most tree problems start quietly. A thin canopy, a few dead limbs at the top, mushrooms at the base, or a crack that was not there last spring. Some of those mean nothing. Others mean the tree is failing from the inside, and in Birmingham that usually gets settled by the next big storm.
Hazard assessment and tree health assessment are both on the K&M list of services. The goal is a plain answer to the question you actually have: does this tree need to come down, can it be trimmed or supported, or can it be left alone? Owner Kenny Malone personally oversees every job and prefers to see the tree in person.

Why people call K&M for this
A tree company that does trimming, cabling and bracing, and removals can give you every option on one visit, instead of steering you to the one service it sells.
K&M has served the Birmingham area for over 30 years and is licensed, bonded, and insured, with coverage up to $1 million in property damage liability. Christy K. wrote that K&M came out the same day for very large, potentially hazardous pines leaning toward her house.
Warning signs a tree may be dangerous
Dead wood in the top of the tree. Bare branches high in the canopy while the rest is leafed out.
Mushrooms or fungus at the base or on the trunk. Often a sign of rot inside the trunk or roots.
Cracks, splits, and cavities. Especially in the trunk or where large limbs join it.
A new lean. A tree that has always leaned is different from one that started leaning after a storm, especially if the soil is cracked or lifting on one side.
Bark falling off, sawdust, or small holes. Signs of decay or wood-boring insects, including pine beetles in stressed pines.
Thin or early-dropping leaves. One bad year can be drought. Several years in a row usually means decline.
One sign alone may be nothing. Several together, on a tree that can reach your house, is worth a call.
What a tree assessment costs
HomeAdvisor's June 2026 arborist cost guide puts a general tree inspection at about $75 to $150, notes that some companies waive the fee if you hire them, and lists formal written tree reports at up to $700.
K&M gives free estimates. If you need a formal written report for an insurance company, a city permit, or a property sale, ask whoever needs the report what credentials they require before you schedule anything.

We have been doing business with K&M for some 20 years. They have always been responsive, reliable and fair.
Had a tree covered in vines with power lines running through it. Trimmed and took it down perfectly.
Tree health and hazard questions
A tree service can look at it and tell you whether it shows signs of decline, decay, or structural problems, and whether it needs trimming, support, or removal. For lab testing of a disease or a formal written report, you would need a certified arborist or consulting arborist.
Look for dead branches in the upper canopy, thin or early-dropping leaves, mushrooms at the base, bark falling off, cracks and cavities, sawdust or small holes, and a new lean. One sign can be nothing. Several together usually mean trouble.
HomeAdvisor puts a general tree inspection at about $75 to $150, and formal written reports at up to $700. Some companies waive the inspection fee if you hire them for the work. K&M gives free estimates.
It gets weaker every year. Dead wood dries out and rots, limbs start dropping, and eventually the trunk or roots fail, often in a storm. A dead tree near a house, driveway, or power line also gets more dangerous and more expensive to remove the longer it stands.
Usually stress first: drought, construction damage to the roots, soil compaction, or storm damage. A stressed tree is then much easier for insects and disease to finish off.
There is no single answer, but root and trunk rots caused by fungi are among the most common problems behind trees that fail. Mushrooms or conks at the base or on the trunk are a common outward sign.
Water deeply during dry spells, mulch the root zone without piling mulch against the trunk, keep cars and equipment off the roots, and remove dead or broken limbs. A tree in serious decline may not come back, and if it is near the house, safety comes first.
For a valuable tree you want to save, a tree that needs disease treatment, or a situation that needs a formal written report, yes. If the question is whether a dead or leaning tree needs to come down, a tree service estimate will usually answer it.
Homeyou puts a medium tree in Birmingham at about $521 to $709. Size, location, and access make the biggest difference. See the pricing guide.
HomeGuide puts removal of a tree under 30 feet at about $150 to $500 nationally, and ProMatcher lists $351 to $435 in Alabama. Trees near the house or with hard access cost more.
Usually not on private property. If the tree is in the city right of way, the city may handle it: in Birmingham, call 311. Utility companies trim trees around their own lines. For a tree on your property, the owner normally pays, and getting more than one estimate is fair.
In general, your homeowners insurance covers damage to your house, even if the tree was your neighbor's. If a neighbor knew the tree was dead or dangerous and did nothing, that can change things. Check your policy and talk to your agent. This is general information, not legal advice.
The loblolly pine. Pines are also among the trees most often hit by pine beetles after drought or storm stress, so a pine that turns brown from the top down should be looked at quickly.
No. K&M handles trimming, cabling and bracing, and removal. For fertilization, injections, or pest and disease treatment, you would want a plant health care company.
If it has a fresh crack, a new lean with lifting soil, or a large broken limb hanging in the canopy, keep people and cars away from it and call. See dangerous tree removal and 24 hour emergency tree service.
