Calera, whose name is Spanish for "lime," has grown fast as Birmingham's growth moves south down I-65 and U.S. 31, reaching more than 14,000 people by 2020. New neighborhoods on wooded land, older lots downtown, and plenty of acreage around town all mean tree work of every size.

K&M Professional Tree Service is based in Columbiana, the Shelby County seat, and has worked across Shelby County and the Birmingham area for over 30 years. K&M is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and owner Kenny Malone personally oversees every job.

The March 2025 tornado

On the evening of March 15, 2025, a tornado tracked about 7 miles through Calera, from north of Minooka Park to east of the Shelby County Airport. The National Weather Service's preliminary survey rated it EF-1 with 90 mph winds and up to 250 yards wide, and most of the damage was to trees: tree damage downtown, numerous snapped trees near the camper dealership by I-65, and many trees snapped and uprooted near O'Neal Quarry.

Storm-damaged trees that are still standing, cracked, or hung up in other trees can fail weeks later. See storm damage tree cleanup and dangerous tree removal.

Calera's brush pickup rules

Calera picks up brush by request through the city's website. The load can be no more than one pickup truck's worth, and limbs, brush, and trees must be stacked with the trunk ends toward the street. Leaves, pine straw, and clippings are picked up on request in bags or boxes.

The city is specific about tree work: if trees are taken down by a contractor, the contractor must remove all debris, including the tree tops. Debris from cleared property is not collected either. Make sure haul-off is written into any tree or clearing quote.

Can Alabama Power cut trees on your property?

Where it holds an easement, yes. Alabama Power trims or cuts trees only where it has a legal right to and believes it is necessary, and most of its easements are permanent and stay with the property when it is sold. Along neighborhood lines it keeps a 30-foot strip, 15 feet on each side. Only line clearance qualified workers should be within 10 feet of an overhead line.

Lots and acreage

A lot of work around Calera is bigger than one tree: clearing a lot to build, opening up acreage, or grading after the trees are gone. K&M handles land and lot clearing, stump grinding, and grading, and the city will not collect debris from cleared property, so haul-off is part of the job.

What tree work costs in Calera

Disputes over a neighbor's tree are generally a civil matter between the two property owners. Talk to your neighbor first, and get legal advice if you cannot work it out. This is general information, not legal advice.

In general, your own homeowners insurance covers damage to your house, even from a neighbor's tree. If the neighbor knew the tree was dead or dangerous and did nothing, that can change things. Check your policy.

Get more than one estimate for the same work, read recent Google reviews, ask for proof of insurance, and get the price in writing with haul-off and the stump spelled out.

Is the company insured, does the price include haul-off and cleanup (the city will not take it), is the stump included, and when will the work be done.

Roughly $150 to $750 using HomeGuide's per-foot figures, and $351 to $435 in Alabama according to ProMatcher. A tree next to the house costs more.

There is no general free program. Alabama Power handles trees threatening its lines, and debris programs sometimes follow a declared disaster. A tree on your own lot is normally the owner's cost.

The loblolly pine. Storm-snapped and beetle-damaged pines are among the most common removals after a storm like March 2025.

Loblolly pine, sweetgum, tulip poplar, and water oak are among the fastest. Fast growth often means weaker wood, which is why they are so often the trees that fail in storms.

Usually only when the tree damages a covered structure, like the house or a fence. Removing a tree that has not hit anything is generally on the owner. See storm damage tree cleanup.

Late fall and winter, when crews are less busy. Spring storm season is the busiest and most expensive time.

Trimming is usually cheaper and keeps the tree. A dead or badly leaning tree usually has to come down. See tree trimming.
