Hoover is a city of wooded lots, and a lot of those trees are big hardwoods and pines growing close to houses, driveways, and decks. When one dies, cracks, or starts leaning, it needs to come down in a controlled way, not wait for the next storm.

K&M Professional Tree Service has worked across the Birmingham area for over 30 years, is based in Columbiana in Shelby County, and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Owner Kenny Malone personally oversees every job. Below is what is specific to Hoover: limb pickup, city trees, power lines, and the storms that have hit here.

Limb and brush pickup in Hoover

Hoover's garbage service is run by Amwaste. Limbs and brush are picked up by request: submit it through MyHooverConnect, the city's app and website for service requests. Large limb piles are collected within 10 days of the request.

The rules: branches can be no longer than 6 feet, and piles should sit within 3 feet of the curb with nothing overhead. Leaves, pine straw, and small limbs go in bags in your cart, and 10 or more bags have to be scheduled. Questions about what is accepted go to 205-739-7311.

If you hire a tree company, the city is clear: landscaping debris is to be removed by the contractor performing the service, and only homeowner-generated material can be scheduled for pickup. Get haul-off written into the quote.

City trees, HOAs, and two counties

Hoover sits in both Jefferson and Shelby Counties. For a tree problem on a city street or city property, use MyHooverConnect. For a tree on your own lot, many Hoover neighborhoods have homeowners associations, and some have their own rules about removing trees, so check before work starts.

If you are replacing a tree you lost, the Hoover Beautification Board hosts an annual Arbor Day tree giveaway at Aldridge Gardens.

Trees and power lines in Hoover

Alabama Power keeps a 30-foot strip, 15 feet on each side, along its neighborhood distribution lines, and you can ask it to look at a tree through its online tree trimming request. Under OSHA and ANSI Z133, only line clearance qualified workers should be within 10 feet of an overhead line. If a tree is on a line, stay back and call Alabama Power first.

Storms in Hoover

It does not take a big tornado to bring down big trees. On December 14, 2020, an EF-0 tornado with 80 mph winds tracked from Bessemer into Hoover. The National Weather Service survey found scores of trees uprooted or snapped near The Oaks on Parkwood Boulevard and a dozen or so very large hardwoods uprooted on Parkwood Road, damaging homes and vehicles, as reported by WVTM 13.

An earlier EF-0 on April 11, 2008 snapped and uprooted trees at the Colonial Grand and Cedar Brook apartments, according to the National Weather Service. Dead, cracked, and leaning trees are the first to go. See dangerous tree removal and storm damage tree cleanup.

Hoover tree service questions

Yes, by request. Submit a pickup request through MyHooverConnect, and large limb piles are collected within 10 days. Small limbs, leaves, and pine straw go in bags in your cart.

No longer than 6 feet. Piles should be within 3 feet of the curb and not under power lines or other overhead obstructions.

No. The city says landscaping debris is to be removed by the contractor performing the service, and only homeowner-generated material can be scheduled. Make sure haul-off is included in your quote.

Through MyHooverConnect, on the website or the app. For questions about what Amwaste accepts, call 205-739-7311.

Check with the City of Hoover before work starts if the tree is near a street, a creek, or on a lot being developed, and check your HOA rules. Trees on city property are the city's to handle.

Both. Hoover lies in Jefferson and Shelby Counties.

ProMatcher lists $351 to $435 for a standing tree under 30 feet in Alabama, and Homeyou puts a medium tree in the Birmingham area at $521 to $709. See the pricing guide.

Far more than an average tree, especially near a house where it has to be rigged down in sections or lifted out with a crane. Birmingham-area homeowners have reported quotes from $1,000 to over $5,000 for trees that size. The pricing guide has the details.

There is no general free program. Trees on city property are the city's, Alabama Power handles trees threatening its lines, and debris programs sometimes follow a declared disaster. A tree on your own lot is normally the owner's cost.

Late fall and winter, when crews are less busy. Spring storm season is when demand, and prices, peak.

You can ask. Flexible scheduling, doing several trees at once, and keeping the firewood can all bring the price down. Cutting insurance or cleanup to save money is not worth it.

A common rule of thumb is no more than about 25 percent of the live canopy in a year. Dead and broken branches can come off any time.

Usually not well. Stripping a tree, sometimes called topping, often kills it or leaves it with weak, fast sprouts that break easily later. If a tree needs that much taken off, removal is usually the better answer.

Heavy pruning is best avoided during the spring growth flush. Late winter, while trees are dormant, is usually best. Dead or hazardous limbs can come off any time.

Trimming is usually cheaper and keeps the tree. A dead or badly leaning tree usually has to come down. See tree trimming.
